It is with great delight that in 2018 we were able to expand our range of Vocational Education Training (VET) subjects at Al-Taqwa College to year 10, 11 and 12. We had previously only offered VET subjects to year 11s and 12s. For 2018 we took the initiative to also introduce VET Community Services Certificate II. We now deliver Sport and Recreation, Business and Community Services across three year levels. We now have 100 VET students at the College and its number is set to rise next year.
Community Services, which is our new and exciting addition to the VET subject repertoire, is a subject that relates to helping individuals and improving aspects of the inner and wider community. It also has a health stream and can lead to employment in community or social work and act as a stepping stone for tertiary study in these fields.
In expanding our VET subjects, we also were required to expand our VET teaching cohort. To teach VET in Victoria you require a Cert IV in Training and Assessment known as a TAE qualification. Registered teachers may complete the course in three days. The course however, requires teachers to complete extensive and very detailed assignments to gain competence in the qualification. The lucky teachers who were involved for this year were Aishah Sheikh, Mohammad Yusuf, Harun Dahir and Ahmed El Hassan. We look forward to the new skills in guiding and developing our massive VET cohort.
